I have used a pellet catching box with plumber's putty. Then someone in the GTA forum mentioned using a box full of rubber mulch. I couldn't have been happier. You can easily recover the deformed pellets at the bottom of the box. I just change the target paper each time I want to get some lead therapy.
@2musiclover5348 месяцев назад
Rubber Mulch has been fantastic for me too. So easy to recover the lead.

I've been using duct seal compound for years. It's non hardening, so it doesn't form a crust like plumbers putty does when exposed to air. It's more expensive and denser, but I've used the same lump for about 10 years now. A 5lb pug is 2.5x10.5x4", so it covers a 10" square to a 1" depth.

Hi Tilly...I use old books bought from charity shops from 50p to £1 each. Best for me is one that is say 10-12 inch by 8 inch by 1.5 + inch thick (thicker the better) then bind it really tight in duct tape. You can put around 500-1000 pellets into either side (spaced out) when it starts to fluff up just put a single strip of duct tape over the fluffed area or when it starts to bulge from pellet build up, just hammer flat, add strip of tape over and carry on. When it cant take any more repair or hold any more pellets, cut the duct tape and recover all your pellets if you want them back! Works great!

That's very impressive. Plumber's putty is a common item in my tool bag, for its traditional use. That's a very simple and straight forward target box, using the baking pan.
Since I'm in rural America, I'll test how much is needed to stop a typical 40g (grain, not gram) 22LR round. From experience with plywood, it may need to be at least 2" thick. Even, if it ends up impractical for 22LR, I'll still make one for an air rifle target, as that's what I commonly use for dispatching crows and squirrels. Both of those critters steal eggs.@ianmorris64379 месяцев назад

The problem I found with using putty was retrieval and disposal of the lead. There were so many pellets in the putty it was impossible to separate them out and I had a lump of lead held together by putty . So what to do with a toxic lead ball held together with goop? Not allowed to put it in the trash, not allowed to put it in recycling... only place is a State weigh station 30 miles round trip from where I live, where you can dispose of toxic chemicals, paints, car batteries etc. and pay a $15 disposal fee....Back to using the heavy duty, noisy old bullet trap where I can gather the lead and donate it to my friends who make "cast bullets" for their black powder guns. For BB's, I use a cardboard box stuffed with old T shirts, the BB's are recoverable and when they bounce off the front, it's time for a new gas cylinder. 😁

Hi mate, another good vide thanx. This putty is also known as "Plumbers Mait", think that might be a trade name? I used to be a plumber, so used a lot of this stuff over the years. I also use it now in one of my small metal funnel shaped pellet catchers, and it makes the pellet hits much quieter. One thing to note is that this stuff will sag downwards after a while, if leaving it out. So the bottom level will slowly get thicker! So you will have to repack it so that its even every now and again. But apart from that its a good backing material.
@tillysgunstocks 9 месяцев назад
I was really surprised mate, I can imagine it will sag a little if left stood upright. I'll make a fresh trap to use just the putty and we can see how it holds up longer term

Personally, I bought a 300mm cube of HARD sponge, and stuck my targets on the outside. Using some tape it all stays together and the pellets go about 1-2cm into the foam. After a year I revolve the cube and use another side. Just make sure you're using a hard foam. Bloomin silent and costs about £20 for 6 years use.

There's no real secrets or trickery with my triggers. I like a shortish first stage and all the others are set pretty safe. Nothing overly light pull wise.
The biggest improvements come from matching the grip types to the trigger, in terms of rake and contact points it can make a huge difference so a nice relaxed wrist and trigger hand. It aids consistency and reduces potential pulled shots.😉

If you are trying for as quiet as you can get it, dimple the surface with the face of a meat tenderizer mallet. The angled surfaces reduce the "smack" of impact a surprising amount, at least for indoor shooting. Outdoor may not be worth the bother, other than for pride and experimental purposes.

I wonder if you could use cornflour mixed with olive oil, made to the consistency of plasticine so it wont flow. Cornflour in water solidifies in response to shock, so it should arrest a pellet. Or put wet sand in a 20 litre bag-in-box.
@timmy38228 месяцев назад
Huh this is actually a really neat idea! I’m getting into shooting and was concerned plinking a steel target would annoy the neighbours and have been looking for an alternative.
Saw one guy use a bag of sand but I can imagine if you shot it a lot it would fall apart when you go to move it and end up with sand everywhere!
In terms of disposing of used pellets etc, what’s the best way to get rid while ensuring you don’t end up containing the environment? Would your locks recycling centre/tip have a special container to throw all those lead pellets in?@tillysgunstocks 8 месяцев назад
