In 1960 the Hearing Aid Industry Conference and Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists formulated a code of ethics. This was designed to better serve the hard of hearing by setting up standards for advertising and merchandising of hearing aids. A five-man ethics committee, consisting of two manufacturers, two hearing aid dealers, and one non-trade member serves the industry and the public by administering the code. We think it significant for the people in Wichita that one of our local hearing aid dealers was selected to serve on this committee. Only a few years ago, a hearing aid weighed a pound and a half and the wearer had to be "wired for sound." Today, tiny transistors powered by miniature batteries, and new tiny components make the modern hearing aid light, comfortable and inconspicuous.
Many hearing aids weigh less than an NEW HEARING AIDS are available which fit in the ear, behind the ear or are built into the frames of glasses. For women, hearing aids are also built into barrettes and earrings and for men into tie clasps. Today's body hearing aids, worn by those with severe loss, are about the size of a cigarette lighter. One out of twelve Americans has some degree of hearing loss. The U.S.
Department of Health, Education and Welfare reports that more than six million Americans have a hearing loss serious enough to require help. Three out of five persons with impaired hearing are under 65 years of age and between five and seven per cent of children in school today have defective hearing. The average person with a hearing loss waits five years before seeking help. This period represents a substantial loss to the individual, the family and the nation.
